In early February 2003 we went for our very first ultrasound. The technician asked repeatedly if this was our first ultrasound. After she finished, she showed us the above picture. TWO little heads. TWO little boys! Although we both had twins in our families, the thought that we would have twins really hadn't occurred to us. We were supposed to go from the ultrasound out for supper to celebrate Jon's birthday. We opted to go home first to attempt to process that as new parents, we would be responsible to not only one, but two little people!
On my birthday a few weeks later, we sat with friends in our living room and studied baby name books. We wanted to find perfect names for our twin boys. A short time later, we decided that Twin A would be Joshua Michael and that Twin B would be Jonah David. We had no idea that we would be meeting Josh and Jonah so soon.
When the amniotic sac surrounding Josh broke as I laid in bed on the morning of St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2003, we quickly found ourselves being transferred from the hospital in Thunder Bay to Ottawa General. I remember during the flight the pilot of the air ambulance ask through the paramedic if we were planning to give the boys Irish names if they were born that day. I just prayed their births would be several weeks away.... yet God had a different plan. Josh was born the following day, March 18, 2003 at 23 weeks 3 days gestational age. He weighed 616 grams.
Jon chronicled our first parenting journey in his Daddy Log which we later transcribed onto a blog telling Josh and Jonah`s story... you can find it here
